Bibliography:
- Barón, J., The Ramón de Errazu legacy. Fortuny, Madrazo and Rico, Madrid, Museo Nacional del Prado, 2005, p. 162, fig. 21.3 (reproduced). Aline Mason was Raimundo de Madrazo's favorite model and formed the aesthetic ideal of bourgeois, inconsequential and frivolous Paris in the last third of the 19th century. He portrayed her in different works showing the best of her art. A good example is this portrait, very close in its conception to the one kept in the Museo Nacional del Prado (P002621) that represents the same model. In both paintings Aline is shown in the fullness of her youth, exuding sensuality, with her Spanish attire like a traditional maja and her makeup highlighting her beautiful features. This prototype image of the Spanish woman enjoyed great acceptance in the neighboring country thanks to the archetypal image that had previously been spread by romantic writers, travelers and musicians.
