DANIEL DE VOS

(1568 / 1605)

DANIEL DE VOS Antwerp, Belgium (1568) / Antwerp, Belgium (1605) "Saint William of Maleval"

Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right quadrant. With important antique frame in ebonized wood and gold decoration. Reference bibliography: - UrquIzar Herrera, A., "An important painting by Daniel de Vos in Spain", in Archivo Español de Arte, no. 278, 1997, pp. 186-187. Very little biographical data and activity of the painter Daniel de Vos is known, except that he trained in the workshop of MartIn de Vos (Antwerp, 1532-1603), his father, and his entry into the Guilds of Flanders. The present painting must have been conceived to be part of a larger series dedicated to some anchorite saints, of which some specimens have been found on the international market and a "Hermit Saint James" in a private Spanish collection. These works are directly inspired by the series Sylvae Sacrae (Hermits in landscapes) designed by MatIn de Vos, which was engraved by Rafael Sadeler I. Measurements: 148 x 190 cm.
