FOLLOWER OF ALESSANDRO ALGARDI (18th - 19th centuries) "Rest in the flight to Egypt"
Bas-relief in cast, chiseled and gilded bronze. Made on an uncertain date of execution, the linking and derivation of Alessandro Algardi's models does not present any type of doubt in this work that represents Rest on the Flight to Egypt. The main members of the Holy Family are resting under a blue sky. The Virgin, in the center, wraps the Child Jesus with a cloth while Saint Joseph, seated, looks up from the book he is holding, directing a complacent look at his wife and his son. The sculptor's original composition enjoyed great popularity in his time and different versions were made in other bronzes and other types of materials in which different variations are found. This specimen is unique in that it lacks the landscape development of other models in which a young angel also appears. Among the best known are those kept in the Fitzwilliam and Victoria & Albert Museum in London or the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Like other specimens, the work is presented in a large octagonal frame made of ebonized wood. Measurements: 28 x 33 cm. Octagonal frame measurements: 60 x 68 cm.
