ITALIAN SCHOOL, POSSIBLY ROMAN (17TH CENTURY) "Saint Gregory in prayer"

Oil on canvas. This painting is inspired by the lost composition created by Annibale Carracci on behalf of Cardinal Anton Maria Salviati, intended to preside over his chapel in the church of San Gregorio al Celio in Rome. This work was confiscated by French troops in 1768 and its place is currently occupied by a copy. The original painting left the country for England and ended up in the collections of Bridgewater House in London, disappearing in the bombings of 1941. Measurements: 98 x 62.5 cm.
