PIETER MEULENER

(1602 / 1654)

PIETER MEULENER Antwerp (1602 / 1654) "Battle scene"

Oil on canvas. He specialised in battle themes, history and landscapes with figures. He became a teacher in Antwerp in 1631. He was greatly influenced by Snayers. A wide panoramic composition with a low horizon. In the foreground, against a background of trees, groups of cavalry are distributed, as is characteristic of this specialist, on different planes, with those in the foreground standing out due to their violently foreshortened postures and touches of bright colour. The galloping soldiers, who form a zigzag pattern, advance towards the enemy, contribute to the dynamism of the composition. To give depth, the branches and elements in the foreground are carefully worked. The wide background of clouds, with heavy clouds and cannon smoke, create a special atmosphere. Certificate of authenticity from Van Hees Art Valuations an private sales signed by Michael Van Hees in 2008 is included. Dimensions: 108 x 153 cm.

Starting price 45.000 €
