ATRIBUIDO AL MAESTRO DE LA MAGDALENA MANSI

(Activo en los Países Bajos, en el primer cuarto del siglo XVI )

ATTRIBUTED TO THE MASTER OF MAGDALENA MANSI (Active in the Netherlands, in the first quarter of the 16th century) "Christ the Redeemer embracing the Cross"

Oil on panel. This important Flemish panel depicting Christ the Redeemer, embracing the cross and carrying the skull of Adam in his right hand, can be attributed, due to its formal characteristics, to the enigmatic painter known as the Master of the Magdalene Mansi. He receives his name from a Saint Mary Magdalene kept in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, from the collection of the Marquis Giambattista Mansi of Lucca, but other works have also been attributed to him, such as: the Salvator Mundi in the Philadelphia Museum and a Lamentation of Christ in the collection of the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. This artist's activity took place in the Netherlands in the first quarter of the 16th century and his style is notable for its numerous stylistic similarities with the work of Metsys. Measurements: 88 x 73 cm.
