Mossi mask-statue, Burkina Faso, c. 1980
This mask statue is a variation of the Karanga mask (plural: Karansé) which is one of the best known of traditional Mossi sculpture in the Yatenga style. Mask statues adorned with a female figure are called Karan-wemba, or Karan-borna or simply Wan-neda. This type of mask statue is not unlike the neighbouring Dogon masks and their representation Satimbe or Yasigine.
