Hungarian Statue, Democratic Republic of the Congo, c. 1960

The Hungana are a very small population of approximately 5,000 people in 2000. Their statues are rare. They have a deep-rooted ancestor cult and carve figures which are placed in special shrines and are known only to the Hungana people who use these objects in healing ceremonies. Ancestor figures of the Hungana people, such as the present one, are extremely rare. They are made of light, light-coloured wood and stained black. Height: 44 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: The Art of a Continent”, p. 121
