Fang mask, Cameroon, c. 1960
The people who call themselves Fang constitute a vast mosaic of communities, established in a large area of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and almost all of northern Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. The Fang used masks in their secret societies. Ngil masks were used by members of a male society during the initiation of new members and the pursuit of wrongdoers.
