Bamileké male statue, Cameroon, c. 1960

The most striking feature of this large, seated wooden figure is the swollen belly contrasting with long, slender arms and rudimentary feet fastened to the ground. This would indicate that this male figure was involved in the healing of diseases of the abdomen. Figures may be involved in all kinds of ceremonies and cult activities that vary widely from one organization to another. Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p. 89 ctro Height: 104 cm
