Esatua Calabash, Bamileké, Cameroon, c. 1960
This large statue of a queen was part of the household throne. In her arms, the figure held a gourd containing ritual objects (a pipe and other personal objects), belonging to the Bamileké. The figure rests her arms on the stylised head of an elephant seen from the side, the feet of the stool and the legs of the queen combine to form a convincing silhouette of an elephant. Reproduced from the catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 40 Height: 148 cm
