Fang statue, Gabon, c. 1960
The Fang people as a whole practice a cult dedicated to the lineages of their ancestors, the aim of which is to protect themselves from the deceased and to obtain their help in matters of daily life. This family cult does not monopolize the religious universe of the Fang, since it coexists with other beliefs and rituals of a more collective nature. The statues of the Fang can be classified into three main groups: heads on long necks, half-figures and full figures, standing or seated. Carved with great simplicity, they display a high degree of sophistication in the coordination of rounded forms. Height: 52 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 96 right
