GIOVANNI STANCHI Rome, Italy (1608) / (1673) "Still life with fruit bowl and vase"

Oil on canvas

The Stanchi brothers, Giovanni (1608-1672), Niccolo (1623-1690) and Angelo (1626-1673), ran a important painting workshop specialized in still lifes that highlighted the Roman artistic panorama of the mid-17th century, receiving commissions from the most important families of the time such as the Chigi, Barberini, Medici and Orsini. Giovanni, the eldest brother, was a teacher and head of the workshop, and his pictorial level stood out above that of his brothers. His works, with bright colors, marked chiaroscuro and compositions often organized in two different elements, presented on stone plinths in dark backgrounds or located in a landscape, are finely made and with a texture that characterizes his production. The coincidence of these elements and above all the quality of execution, focuses the attribution of this painting on the master, Giovanni Stanchi.
