ALONSO DEL ARCO

(1635 / 1704)

ALONSO DEL ARCO Madrid (1635 / 1704) "Immaculate Conception", 1687

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Reference bibliography: - Galindo, N., “Alonso del Arco”, Spanish Archive of Art and Archaeology, no. 45, 1972, pp. 347-386. - Valdivieso, E. “Tres nuevas obras de Alonso del Arco”, Bulletin of the Seminar of Art and Archaeology Studies, 1972, no. 38, pp. 534-538. A disciple and collaborator of Antonio de Pereda, Alonso del Arco was one of the most important painters of the Madrid school of the 17th century, as well as one of the most prolific. One of the themes with which he obtained the greatest fortune was that of the Immaculate Conception, of which he made different versions for cloisters and temples. The splendid canvas shown here, signed by the painter and dated in the year 1687, is related in its composition to that of the Augustinian convent of Medina del Campo and the one preserved in a private collection in Valladolid. All of them present the Immaculate Conception, fusing the symbols of the "Tota Pulchra" with those of the vision of Saint John in Patmos referring to the Apocalypse, alluding to the purity of the Virgin and her triumph over evil. Mary has beautiful features and wears the white tunic and blue mantle, characteristic of the Immaculate. She appears enveloped in a large circle of radiant light representing the sun, with the moon under her feet and with a crown of twelve stars on her head, according to the apocalyptic vision. The heavenly procession that accompanies her carries in their hands some symbols taken from the Song of Songs such as the mirror, the olive branch, the lily and the roses. As in the rest of his Immaculate Conceptions, it is endowed with great dynamism due to the ascending and triumphant sense presented by the main figure, with her cloak agitated by the wind and the angels fluttering around her with their complicated positions and daring foreshortenings. However, this painting differs from those referred to not only because it presents the quality of its original autographs, but also because in the known versions sin is represented in the lower left corner by the image of a dragon that is threatened by the angel, while this painting presents the originality of being presented with the appearance of a horrifying demon. Measurements: 210 x 148 cm.
