BRAULIO GONZÁLEZ LOBERA Zaragoza (1724 / 1802) "Immaculate Conception"
Oil on canvas. With an important period frame in carved and gilded wood. This splendid work is inspired by an original design by Francisco Bayeu (1734-1795); a model that would be translated into engraving by his brother Ramón Bayeu (1744-1793). The Virgin, dressed in a white tunic and blue cloak, appears crowned with stars and treading on the crescent moon, surrounded by a celestial court in which one of the angels carries a lily branch as a symbol of her purity. Its style allows it to be assigned to the work of one of the most important Zaragoza artists of the second half of the 18th century: Braulio González, a painter who maintained a close friendship and professional ties with the Bayeu family, to the point of becoming the godfather of Manuel Bayeu (1740-1809). Trained in Zaragoza and Madrid, he excelled in the art of painting and also in engraving. We would like to thank Mr. Arturo Ansón Navarro for his help in cataloguing this lot. Measurements: 132 x 94 cm.
