Bamileké mask, Cameroon, c. 1970
Most of these Grassland kingdoms carved masks depicting male and female human heads or faces, and animals such as buffalo, deer, elephants and birds. According to tradition, the secret societies that used these masks believed that they had been created and consecrated by their ancestors themselves, other masks inspired great fear and were used during important ceremonies or annual festivals. Masks that provoke fear and apprehension are the work of the societies responsible for the repression. Height: 57 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: The Art of a Continent”, p.- 201 right.
