Baulé Blolo Bla statue, spiritual figure of a wife, Ivory C

The Baulé were always characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, and a deep aversion to rigid political structures. They are one of the tribes where sculpture is produced both for the appreciation of aesthetic beauty and for ceremonial purposes. Their wooden sculptures allow closer contact with the supernatural world of the ancestors. These ancestral statues, male and female, have a marked traditional style. Their body is thin, the face delicate, the forehead high, and the mouth thin, the hairstyle is very stylized and elaborate, and this aesthetic is still used today in the hair of the Baulé. Reproduced in the catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, page 33. Height: 170 cm
