Baulé horseman statue, Ivory Coast, c. 1960

The Baulé were always characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance and a deep aversion to rigid political structures. They acquired the experience of woodcarving from the Gouro and try to show in their carving the creative genius they possessed in the handling of metals. They apply goldsmithing techniques to the wood and thus appear, a refined, serene and solemn aesthetic. It is one of the tribes where sculpture is produced both for the aesthetic appreciation of beauty and for ceremonial purposes. Height: 63 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p. 124 right
