Bronze statuette Benin, Nigeria, c. 1950
For a long time, Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence going back several centuries in West Africa, and both the level of technical achievement in bronze casting and the monumental vigour of the figures represented were the object of great admiration. Most of the figures represented court officials, equestrian figures, queens and cocks. Representations of these objects served above all to exalt the king, the queen mother, princes, the royal house and army commanders, represented with their arms and armour and their servants, hunters and musicians or represented important events. Height: 31 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p. 74
