Dogon statue, Mali, c. 1950
The general characteristic of Dogon statues is that they render the human body in a very simple way, reducing the details to the essential. Some figures are extremely elongated with an emphasis on geometric forms. They give the impression of immobility with a mysterious sense of solemn gravity and serene majesty, although at the same time they convey a latent movement. They serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world to transmit knowledge to the initiates. Reproduced from the catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 47 Height: 197 cm
