Fang Mabéa statue, Gabon, c. 1970
The Fang people as a whole practice a cult dedicated to the lineages of their ancestors, the Mabéa, whose aim is to protect themselves from the deceased and to request their help in matters of daily life. This family cult does not monopolize the religious universe of Fang, since it coexists with other beliefs and rituals of a more collective nature. Carved with great simplicity, while displaying a high degree of sophistication in the coordination of rounded forms. The neck is usually cylindrical in shape. The arms have various positions: the hands together in front of the body, sometimes holding an object, holding a container, attached to it, and hands resting on the knees in seated figures. Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 95 left Height: 45 cm
