Fang mask, Gabon, c. 1960

The Fang used masks in their secret societies. Ngil masks were used by members of a male society during the initiation of new members and the pursuit of wrongdoers. The elongated, large masks, covered in kaolin, and with a face that is generally heart-shaped, with a long, thin nose, are well known.
