Lot 96
Hogon-Dogon male statue, Mali, c. 1980
Sculptures of this style originate in the plain of the Seno River, where the Dogon mixed with Bamana and possibly Mossi populations. They are distinguished by the angular stylization of the body and by scarifications. The Hogon is the spiritual leader of the village. He is chosen from among the oldest men in the village families. After his election, he must undergo six months of initiation during which he is not allowed to shave or wash, he wears white clothing and no one is allowed to touch him. A young teenage virgin takes care of him, cleans his house and prepares his meals. Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 71 right Height: 122 cm
