Igbo statue, Nigeria, c. 1970

Igbo sculpture is subject to fairly strict rules, the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical and vertical, with the legs slightly extended, the arms away from the body and the hands stretched forward and the palms open. The proportions are the same as those of the human body, with the exception of the neck, which is more elongated and shows the reciprocal relationship that exists between men and gods. The whole gives the impression of balance and stability but lacks the degree of refinement and precision. Reproduced from the catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 31. Height: 164 cm
