Ioniaken mask -Toussian, Burkina Faso, c. 1970
The Toussian mask is a mask that regulates community life. It has multiple uses: it blesses the seeds of cereals for sowing, and if the harvest is abundant, a white chicken is offered to it before consumption. It is also used every time an old person dies, and is used as a ritual for their repose. It eliminates evil, brings health and trains young people to be adults. It orders the presence of animals such as the goat and the use of the local drink "Ko Ko Kou" in funeral rites. Height: 96 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 210
