(1863 / 1923)

JOAQUIN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA Valencia (1863) / Cercedilla, Madrid (1923) "Figure of a woman sitting on the floor", c.1902-1902

Charcoal pencil on paper “GUARRO” type paper, fine, matte, slightly satin, has incomplete filigree of a crown, slightly boned white. On the reverse, handwritten inscription of Joaquin Sorolla: “Flock ahead / of all the figures of Leon / until the donkey in the foreground / term - or, oxen plowing / undulating land” Provenance: -Sorolla's will, series R, n .º 43 (folder with several drawings), inventory from 1929, awarded to his daughter Elena Sorolla Garcia -Theo Gallery, Madrid -Private collection, Madrid The figure could have been taken in the Leon market where it was common for women to sit on the floor where they presented their products for sale. The inscription on the reverse, although it reflects some ideas that Sorolla had at that time to carry out a larger work of type from Leon, would not be carried out until 1906-1907 and it did not include either the herd or the plowing oxen that he comments. We thank Blanca Pons-Sorolla for cataloging this work. Measurements: 10.9 x 16.2 cm.
