Lobi Statue, Burkina Faso, c. 1970
The sculptors, who live from agriculture, devote only part of their time to sculpture. The Lobi do not wear masks, but create male and female spirit figures called Bateba and sculpted heads on a pole placed in the ground. Bateba is considered a living being and can see, communicate and intervene on behalf of its spirit. In each house there is a small shrine dedicated to the worship of ancestral spirits.
