Ogoni mask, Nigeria, c. 1970

The Ogoni allow a mask to “speak.” The movable lower jaw is attached to the head of the mask, left and right, by fiber cords. Ogoni mask dances serve a wide variety of functions, which depending on the region may range from simple entertainment to participation in funeral services and harvest festivals, and the implementation of court verdicts. Wild animal masks are danced, acrobatically, on the occasion of agrarian rituals. Height: 25 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 178 left
