Ogoni mask, Nigeria, c. 1970

This is a typical Ogoni mask, with a hinged jaw. The mask shows the characteristics of their style, carved from light wood and relatively small. Its face, with the small, broad, upward-curving nose, is coloured white. The head is worn in a high, rounded, dark hairstyle. Also its ears, the round scarification marks on both temples and the forehead, the outlines of its slanted eyes and the wide mouth are dark. Its large jaws allow an Ogoni mask to 'speak'. The movable lower jaw is attached to the head of the mask, left and right, by fibre cords. Height: 28 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 179
