Punu statue, Gabon, c. 1960

Among the Punu and Lumbo of Gabon, sculptures of figures are rare and little precise information is known about their ritual context. The Lumbo are closely related to the Punu, and both have a Moukouyi society, this society uses both Okuyi masks and sculpted figures. The figures are most often used for divination rituals, as guardians of relics and objects of protection. The hairstyle and scarification patterns on this figure are reminiscent of Okuyi masks.
