Senufo Statue. Ivory Coast, c. 1970

The Senufo are an AFRICANO ethnic group, present in Burkina Faso, in the south of Mali (mainly in the Sikasso region) and in the Ivory Coast (in the north, around the towns of Boundiali and Korhogo), with approximately one and a half million people. The theology of the Senufo is based on the belief in Kulotiolo, a powerful god and Katielo, a mother goddess. The "maternities" are therefore avatars of the great mother goddess Katielo or Katyelo, which can be translated as "old mother", and the children are the initiates in the Poro, a secret society of community initiation. Height: 165 cm. Reproduced from the catalogue "Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent", p.- 25
