Statue of a Mambila ancestor, Nigeria, c. 1940

The Mambila carved a considerable number of figures that are characterised by a heart-shaped face and the pigments were often applied afterwards. Mambila figures embody ancestors who, according to their belief, are responsible for the wealth of the clan. The figures are shown with bent legs and an enlarged head.
