Statue of a Punu ancestor, Gabon, c. 1980

This is a rare sculpture from the Punu people of Gabon, with a very fine face, full of sweetness and serenity and with an elegant headdress. The torso is covered with traditional ritual scarification. It represents a female ancestor spirit, a protective "maiden" spirit who watches over the Punu people. The image of this Spirit is most often carved on masks. Less common are sculptures of the protective woman. Height: 56 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 62 left.
