Three-faced Fang Okak statue, on a basket, Cameroon, c. 1970
Byeri reliquary figures are undoubtedly the most mysterious and emblematic of AFRICANO art. The Byeri cult (ancestor cult) was practiced in all Fang villages, both in southern Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Among the Fang, the Byeri are associated with the cult of ancestors and more specifically with the reliquaries dedicated to them. The Byeri refers both to the cult and to the related objects. Height: 43 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: the Art of a Continent”, p.- 99 left
