WILLIAM HOGARTH London, United Kingdom (1697 / 1764) "Don Q

Six copper engravings - Funeral of Crisóstomo. Marcela claims her freedom of choice as a woman. - The innkeeper and her daughter plaster Don Quixote's wounds, with Maritornes shining a light for them. - Don Quixote takes a basin from a barber, imagining it to be Mambrino's helmet. - Don Quixote frees the galley slaves, prisoners who were being taken to the galleys. - Don Quixote, the goatherd, and Sancho with the unfortunate Cardenio in Sierra Morena. - The priest and the barber disguising themselves at the inn to persuade Don Quixote to return home. Tonson commissioned these engravings from Hogarth in 1726, for his 1738 edition of Don Quixote; but he preferred those by Vander Gucht. In 1790, the Boydells purchased the plates, still unused, and they, Baldwin and Cradock & Joy in 1820. Measurements: Plate print: 25.4 x 17.6 cm.
