Waja Statue, Nigeria, c. 1950

Waja sculptures are used by members of Mam society, and are concerned with human fertility and crops. Waja art, like that of their neighbours the Chamba, Jukun, Mamiya and Wurkun of the upper Benue River in northern Nigeria, received little attention until the 1960s, and attributions of individual sculptures to one group or another can be uncertain. Height: 35 cm Reproduced: Catalogue “Africa Babel: The Art of a Continent”, p. 78
